What are dedicated servers in a multiplayer game?
Q. I have played mw2 for a while and i know that it uses hosts for a multiplayer game, pretty simple. But now i picked up BFBC2 and it has servers. I don't get how they work.

A. A dedicated server is a computer or console set up to run a server that hosts a game, but, no one can play on the computer or console that is hosting the game. The computer or console is therefore dedicated to running the server!

How to validate servers and implement change control?
Q. I am a IT professional, but I never worked in a environment where the network has to be validated and use change control. From the jobs that I worked for, if I needed to change the configuration of the network or server, add a program or patch, I just did it. I want to enable policies that any changes that need to be made need to get signed off by management. This provides me with a change control environment, so that if I got audited I can show what was changed and so forth. Just like there is software validation, I need to validate the servers that our company uses. A. You're about to learn what "IT Professional" really means. Validating servers (and workstations) is done by creating a profile of what a server (or workstation) should look like both hardware and software. Management buys off on this. You then compare that to the servers (and workstations) you have and note where they differ. You present your report and recommendations to management. Change control is essential; in a large environment with several admins change control is what lets everyone know what's going on. Say you make a GPO change on a Wink2K server - say it was to hide the control panel choice. Then you go on vacation. A user calls helpdesk and says "Hey, I can't get to my control panel." Why are Yahoo servers unstable causing Messenger to crash and why doesn't Yahoo own up to the fact?
Q. Periodically Yahoo messenger crashes continually. The next time it works just fine. Then it crashes the time after. Then fine etc. As no changes have been made to the workstation and the connection is stable Yahoo servers have issues and they are not telling anyone.

A. There have been many computers that prove to be incompatible with Messenger 10, but it's not the fault of Yahoo - there are so many variables in computer setups. Occasionally, downloads from the Yahoo Installer web site are faulty owing to network problems - again, not truly Yahoo's fault. File Hippo has several versions of Yahoo Messenger. Messenger 10 has proven glitchy on some computers, especially those with Windows 7, so stick with Messenger 9. Download and SAVE the program directly from there - it seems less problematic than an update or install from Yahoo's site. I suggest saving it to your Desktop so it doesn't get 'lost'.
