How do I get a glass fragment splinter out?
Q. My son broke a plate, I swept it up, and must have got a fragment in my foot. It is a little painful and I can't get it out. Afraid it will get infected. Ideas to get it out?

A. Soak you foot in warm water for a few minutes and see if that makes it come out. Then take a pear of tweezers to it. If that doesn't work get someone to try for you. If THAT doesn't work then just go to hospital.

What is the diffference between a story and a fragment?
Q. Also I would like to know the basic ingredients required for a write up to be called a complete story. (I wrote something for a magazine and they say Its a "fragment" and not a "story". Now I have to convert it to a story)

A. Ammar, to qualify as a story, there need to be certain elements present. There needs to be one main character. He or she needs to have a goal or desire. There needs to be something keeping him/her from attaining it without difficulty. There needs to be a conclusion which satisfies, usually but not necessarily overcoming the odds and achieving the goal or desire. And the character needs to be changed by the events. Another way to look at it is that every story needs: A beginning (the establishment of who the character is, what he needs, and why), a middle (how it can be attained, and what stands in the way, possibly with increasing stakes like a ticking clock), and an end, often overcoming or failing to overcome one final hurdle, at… [cont.]

How come my scanner is only copying a fragment of the page?
Q. I have an HP Photosmart C3150. I'm trying to scan a letter that was originally folded in three, but now lays flat. For some reason my scanner only scans a small section of the paper. It doesn't just scan a corner, it scans a few lines from the middle of the letter. I've tried scanning it several times and a different, random portion of the letter gets scanned each time. What am I doing wrong? Okay, here what I'm doing: I put the letter on the lower right corner of the scanner, lower the cover, and press the "Start Scan" button. Oddly, it only prints a small segment. When I press the "Start Copy" button, it prints the full page like it's supposed to. WTF?

A. You don't say exactly what you are and aren't doing, but I'd guess you're not overriding the automatically selected scan area. Once the preview has been rendered, it looks for white space and tries to determine what you want scanned. There will be a little rectangle surrouding that area. If it's not what you need, use your mouse to resize and reposition the scan area by dragging on the rectangle's edges and corners.
