How much Horsepower does a Crane Cam Ignition Add?
Q. I have a 1997 VW Jetta and I want to add a Crane Cam ignition. How much horsepower will it add???
Asked by Travis - Sun Feb 14 13:13:41 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Probably a horse or two. Horsepower comes from increaseing the amount of intake, exhaust, or displacement.

Ignition timing for a 274 crane energizer cam?
Q. What should i set the ignition timing for a crane energizer cam in a chevy 350 .It has a 274 duration 218@ .050 and .450 lift 64cc vortech heads. compression is 9.5:1
Asked by james_bump2002 - Wed May 7 01:39:38 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What compression ratio and heads do you have. Gen rule of thumb though most chevy v8's makes best power at 34-38* total timing. That would be around 14 to 18 degrees BTDC at idle with vac advance line un hooked and capped off. But compression ratio and head type need a diff amount.. Like real high compression would need less timing to keep it out of detonation. I would start with 10* BTDC and work up to about 16* feeling how engine responce is, listening for any ping, etc.

What diference is it gonna make to my 1967 pontiac gto by changing original valve springs to crane cam ones?
Q. Hi...Well i have a 1967 Pontiac gto, 400... So it is not stock...i have a dif intake...carbs...valves and other camshaft and other pistons and everything... BUT...the valve springs are the same then the ones that were in there...original...they were kinda old...so i orderd the crane cam double valve spring...so will the diference be noticble? will i feel any diference? These vere old ones and were kinda easy to move...and these are harder ones... o and if anybody know...what cam would be good for that car? it now has the edelbrock performance plus...its like stock...so any suggestion?

A. Let's not talk about performance at this moment. Let's talk about compatibility of parts. You need to figure out what kind of camshaft and the actual camshaft lift. The way to do that is to call camshaft manufacturer as long you know the camshaft part #. If you don't then remove the camshaft, you will find couple numbers etched on the ends of camshaft. You just cannot install different valve springs and hope for the best, you need to know spring install height and pressure otherwise You will definitely wiped out your camshaft and damage your valve train. Now for performance, if the motor runs good in all RPMs, then installing different springs will not give you any noticeable performance gain. Bottom line, I doubt you have original… [cont.]

Which muscles up more horsepower a Chevy 377ci or a Chevy 383ci?
Q. After they were both dyno'd out the 377 had more horsepower than the 383. Their basically twin engines, both have; AFR 195cc heads, Crane 19139 cams, 800 Holleys, matching headers and on and on. So why or how is that?
Asked by amy - Sat Mar 22 10:08:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If in fact they are both built off the same sheet.. both the 377 and the 383 will spit out similar horsepower ratings.. There is no disputing the 377 would have a slight advantage in horsepower, with it's cubic inch of displacement being a larger bore and carrying higher rpm. ie: 1.30 horsepower per cubic inch at 490hp for the 377 versus 1.25 horsepower per cubic inch at 480 hp for the 383. So in reality you probably wouldn't notice the difference. But what you will notice and I'm sure your aware from the dyno test is the 383 puts out much more torque in the lower and mid rpm range. Can i ask what their being used for? I run 377's in a circle track car and a street car and love them.. But 383's have the gettiups and go's too

What size fuel injectors should I use in my Dakota?
Q. I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota with a 318, bored out .030, 9.5-1 compression, lightweight TRW pistons, balanced and weight matched Eagle rods, stock crank, balanced rolling assembly, Crane Compucam 2000 mild cam, 1.6 roller rockers, heavy valve springs, Mopar double roller timing chain with a spring-loaded slack adjuster, Mopar M1 intake manifold, soon to be getting a opened-up throttle body. its a 95 so it has the higher pressure fuel pump. It also has Pacesetter headers, dual 2-1/2 inch exhaust, Mopar Performance ECM, Accel coil, huge gauge champion truck spark plug wires, and double platinum plugs. My question is with all that nifty stuff, what size injectors should I use? I have been told the stockers are 19lb/hr, thats whats on it now,… [cont.]

A. Duration is not the only factor you have to consider when choosing fuel injectors. The amount of fuel delivered in that duration is the major factor. This is where the lb/hr figures come in to play. Seeing as how you are running 9.5 to 1 compression (obviously built to run on lower octane gasoline) , I would consider continuing to run the the stock fuel injectors. Your engine control module (ECM) should be more than up to the task of handling the modifications, as airflow should still be within the OEM parameters, even with a bored out TB. On another note, if you're having the TB opened up wider, make sure you get the intake matched to the new bore, and consider having the runners in the intake opened up as well. Rebuilding a 350 from 79 Corvette. Wondering about parts? Pt 3?
Q. I was wondering if this setup may work for my 350 rebuild on my 79 Corvette? 1) Edlebrock Carburator - Designed for small-block and small displacement big-block engines, these carbs are recommended only for stock to Performer level applications. They are not recommended for use on RPM or Torker II intake manifolds. Match with an Edelbrock Performer or Performer EPS manifold and other brands of similar design. Calibrated 2% leaner than #1405. Includes both timed and full vacuum ports for ignition advance. Comes with: Metering Jets Primary .098, Secondary .095; Metering Rods .075 x .047; Step-Up Spring yellow (4" Hg). 2) Chevrolet 262-400 Small-Block V8 Intake manifold performer - '86 & EARLIER (idle-5500 rpm) Designed for street 1955-86 [cont.]

A. Wow, you used alot of name brand stuff. It would be impossible to tell you how much rear wheel horse power you have as that matters not only on engine and tranny, but the rear end ratio. Now im not certain what the guy ahead of me was thinkin, but it's probly not boku horsepower. Ive seen similar engines only dyno 400. Unfortunately, you want a true number, go to the dyno man!. Asides from that, anyones guess is as good as yours.

Q. How much horsepower will I get out of a 4 bolt main 350 with .060 hypereutectic pistons, 302 duration/500 lift crane cam, 2.02 heads ported and polished, roller rockers, edelbrock performer intake, 750 holley carb, stock distributor, true roller timing chain...

A. There are still alot of variables involved but depending on how well the different parts mesh and how good your tuning skills are I would estimate 400 HP. Other setups I have seen with that cam have made anywhere from 350 to 500 HP but the high end engines were built by serious racing engine shops and tested with multiple combinations of parts on a dyno before they got them perfect.

A. More than likely no. Most after market accessories are stamped with Trade Marked names. IF it were a Mikey Thompson engine, I doubt if it would have wound up in your motor home. If you can trace the lineage of the power train and chassis, you will find that the engine was built at one of the Dodge truck plants. It's the innards that would tell the truth.Of course you could be blowing smoke, believe what you will.

Stumble from idle?
Q. I have a 482 bbc mild drag race engine with .714 lift cam and it stumbles 95% of the time off of idle. When Im drag racing I leave the line a 3000rpm and it doesnt hesitate then. I called Crane cam and the tech told me its because of that big cam and im not creating enough cylinder pressure off of idle.I cant really flash it up to get my stall converter's flash stall because it hesitates. If dont hesitate at all during idle it only does it when in gear. It doesnt hesitate if I hesitate if I bring the rpm up to 2000rpm and nail it either. I have a 1050 Holley dominator and my cam works from 4400 rpm to 7800rpm. Im just trying to get a second oppinion. thanx

A. A stumble off idle is norm due to 1 of two things.. Not enough fuel or too much fuel. Start with making sure floats are adjusted right. (remove sight plug, crank engine, adjust so fuel just is at bottom of sight plug hole) Set idle mixture screws (all 4 of them) to get the highest vac reading on a test vac gauge) Now you get to the pump cam and pump shooter tuning (this is what I think your stumble may be coming from) It's a test it and see type thing.. Keep changing pump shooters.. Your looking for the smallest sized one that will still give you good clean throttle responce Now change out the pump cams to help clean up the responce even more.. Also check your fuel pressure. 7.5 psi is the most pressure you want Also ign timing… [cont.]

1969 Oldsmobile 455?
Q. The engine has been rebuilt and the heads have been redone, the valves are original. It has a crane cam 290 dur, at 512 lift. I had it running and it started to tick on and off. Then it was a sloppy tick. I removed the intake manifold and valve cover and noticed exhaust valve was stuck down. I pried it back up and started again but it did it again. A. Not likely. That would burn a piston due to detonation, but not stick a valve. Most likely either a lifter pumped up on you a piston banged the valve. or there is an oiling problem and the valve stuck. Look at the sides of the valve stem after you pull it out. If there are marks or discoloration in the guide wear area, think overheating or lack of lubrication to that area of the head. If no damage, think about getting anti-pump up lifters. Crane makes em, as do many others. This helps to avoid those high rpm mishaps. You may even wish to use some putty and do a test build and spin the engine by hand to see the actual clearance, not just rely on the theoretical, between the valves and the pistons. If the heads have been milled, and the… [cont.]

Where can i find a Proformance Camshaft for Dodge 3.9L V6?
Q. I have a 89' Dodge Dakota Sport that i would like to put a mild cam in something like .441 Intake and exhaust. I have looked at companies like Crane and Comp. but it don't look like there is anyone that makes a performance cam for a V6... Any Ideas? Maybe I should just do a 318 Swap?

about how much hp will this engine have?
Q. i've got a motor i've just got through rebuilding. Its a 76 model 350. It has been bored .030 over, is has double hump camel hump heads, flat top hypereutectic pistons, a 284 h12 energizer hydrolic crane cam, balanced crank, and headers, i'll most likely be using a factory carb a four barrel quadrajet.. About how much hp will this engine produce? just a rough estimate would be ok. Its just going to go in a weekend driver 82 chevy c10. If theres anything other info needed let me know.. yes the heads are ported and i will have headers with 3in" dual exhaust going into super 44 flowmasters. My camshafts "advertised duration" is 284* and thats all i know on that. The head cc's are around 64cc. i have no clue what the compression is.. The… [cont.]

A. ***EDIT*** 462's are good heads (same thing I was running on my 11 second street/strip car untill one cracked). They are 62cc chamber heads. Used on the higher HP 327's of the mid 60's up through 68. Most date codes will put them around 65-67 157cc intake port. 1.94/1.50" valves Stock un ported flow #'s Lift Intake cfm Exhaust CFM (with pipe) .050" 18 27 .100" 50 54 .200" 119 91 .300" 167 121 .400" 198 134 .500" 212 139 .600" 218 142 I would now est HP to be in the 330-350 HP range.. A better cam would bring #'s up. Your energizer cam is a single pattern cam (same duration and lift for intake and exhaust) As you can see by the head flow chart the exhaust port is a good bit weaker than the intake… [cont.]

adding hp to my 82 chevy silverado c10 with a 350?
Q. The engine block is a 76 model bored .30 over, has 64cc camel hump heads, a quadrajet i dont know the cfm, a 284 crane cam, i believe the crank has been lightened and balanced. It will get up and go already but i wanna know what other things can i do to add more horse power besides NOS or any forced induciton. Can you put power pulleys on this engine? ok sorry i didnt add these details i already have headers with 2.5" exhaust with super 44 flowmasters turned down before the axle. and i also have a 2800 stall.

A. Buy a good HEI distributor. You want full mechanical advance before 2000rpm and about 34degrees total advance.

A. For general performance boost you want an Edelbrock performer series. For strip Wiend Tunnel ram with double pumper Holly 800's (but you'll have to cut a hole in your hood).
