What size camshaft should I put in my stock 1980 Chevy truck?
Q. I want my truck to have that race car lope. I love it as choppy as can be but I want it to run good on the street. It may hit the strip eventually but mostly as a daily driver. What size camshaft would be good to put in?

A. Camshaft position sensor,,signal to tell the computer to make minute adjustment on the emission system,,,and save you gas you can hardly notice it not working,as long it is not shorted or grounded common problem is the small magnet inside falls off,,if the magnet didn't smash the moving parts inside,,you will only replace the sensor, which is cheap, part and labor wise,,,otherwise you ll have to replace, the whole assembly which is time consuming, and part is more expensive

Where is the Camshaft Position Sensor located on a 1997 Mercury Villager?
Q. I hooked up an OBD II and it gave me the code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A-Bank 1 Circuit Malfunction. What does that mean and can it stop the spark from reaching the coil? I also need the location for this particular sensor? HELP!!! THANKS!!! please read details before answering!!! THANKS!

A. Unfortunately the Mercury Villager uses a Nissan engine. Actually that isn't unfortunate because Nissan knows how to build a good engine, but it also uses Nissan's electronic engine controls. Nissan houses the Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) inside the distributor. It is actually not a serviceable component and requires replacement of the entire distributor. This can be very costly. I would make certain the CMP is actually the failed component. Let's look at a couple things first. Clear the code and take the vehicle for a ride again. Does the code reoccur? If it does, then I would see if I had 12 volts at the black and white wire going into the distributor while cranking the engine. If not, then you need to find out why. Unfortunately… [cont.]

How much does it cost to change a camshaft for a 94 holden barina?

Where is the camshaft position sensor on a 1994 Ford Windstar?
Q. I have a 1994 Ford Windstar 3.8L GL. I need to replace the camshaft position sensor, but I can't find it anywhere. I have tried searching online as well as using a repair manual.

A. On top of the engine timing cover. But to repair whatever issue you are having, most likely requires that you replace the cam sensor AND synchronizer assembly. This part requires EXACT proper orientation upon installation of the new part, failing which will result in driveability issues and hard starting. Hope this helps.

A. whats this 2 valve/4 valve stuff? many cars have sohc and 4 valves per cyl.- on dohc heads, one cam operates the intake valves & one operates the exhaust valves. on sohc heads, one cam does both jobs. being a v6, your engine has 2 heads- with one cam for each head

I need to know how to line up crankshaft with camshaft for correct timing?
Q. Renault Megane 2003. Trying to help a friend short on cash. The crank pulley was in 2 pieces. I was a qualified mechanic many years ago & thought this would be easy. Can't believe with todays technology that by taking off the crank pulley, the crankshaft can turn & camshaft does not. I only hope that valves have not been bent as I used the cranking of the engine to loosen nut on crank pulley. I know I am getting close to being lined up but just want to know correct procedure.

A. There should be a timing mark on cam gear that lines up with pointer on timing cover. crankshaft has timing pin inserted through cylinder block after removing blanking plug on front above sump near gearbox bell housing.you will have to put car in gear with one wheel raised to turn engine until you replace crankshaft pulley bolt. make sure bolt is tight when finished or you,l have bent valves.

Can shifting an automatic in and out of neutral cause a camshaft sensor error?
Q. I shifted my car in and out of neutral by mistake and the check engine light came almost immediately and the car started misfiring. I checked the check engine code and it was P0340 for camshaft position sensor. Was this just a coincidence that I got this code at the same time or can this be related to this shifting in and out of neutral. I have a 2001 Sebring 2.7 liter V6

How do you know a camshaft position sensor is bad..?
Q. ..On a 1998 Mercury Sable. I was driving it and it started to handle rough so I went and had it looked at. The car shop said it might be a camshaft position sensor or synchronizer. When I started it up again it works fine now and haven't had any trouble running errands but the check engine light is on. Can someone try to help me figure out what the problem is?

A. If you go to autozone, the parts place, they will do a diagnostic scan on your vehicle for free. Your car is new enough to have this done. The scan, if your check engine light is on, will tell you exactly what the problem is. www.autozone.com

why are my crankshaft and camshaft sensors not getting a connection?
Q. i have a 2003 olds alero V6 3.4L. my car dealership told me that i have a hard time starting it because the camshaft and crankshaft sensors are not getting a connection so i ahd them replaced and it did not take care of the problem. i have a hard time getting it started mainly when it is warmed up or is warm outside. it will crank & crank and then all of a sudden start. what else would be causing them not to get a connection?

A. on UK cars with this problem id be looking at the coolant temperature sensor, this tells the brain of the car car how hot/cold the engine is and adjusts the fuelling to suit. Normally if there is no signal to the crank and cam sensors then there is a wiring or control unit fault. Speak to your dealer again, get him to explain properly.

Can someone help me with removing a camshaft pulley on an 88 Mazda 323?
Q. The shop manual shows the use of a special "pulley wrench" like the one in the photo below (see link below) in which the bolts on the outside of the pulley are tightened onto the arms of the wrench and then this wrench is used in conjunction with a breaker bar to remove the inner bolt. Anyway, nobody near me seems to carry this pulley wrench. If we try to remove the bolt without it, the camshaft just turns along with the breaker bar. We need a way to hold the pulley (from the top, not the outside) that will keep it from turning while we use the breaker bar to remove the large bolt in the center holding it on. Any (reasonable) ideas other than taking it to a repair shop? We want to do this ourselves.

I would ask the auto stores where they know of that rents them...but it sounds like the same problem he was complaining about. Good luck to you.

A. Autozone can just "read your codes". However, you may be looking at a power control module (pcm, the vehicle's "computer"), where the signal from the camshaft position sensor goes. You must get a complete engine diagnosis to determine whether it is indeed your camshaft positioning sensor or your pcm.

Changing a camshaft without replacing the bearings?
Q. Can I change the camshaft in my small block chevy 350 without changing the cam bearings? The motor is appears fairly fresh. The motor is still in the car and I didn't plan on taking it out yet... Can you change the bearings while it is still in the car??

A. I know that there is no way to plasti-gauge the bearings, but do you really want to take that chance? Removal of the old bearings and installing the new ones will take about an hour with the correct tool. Isn't that time well spent to protect your investment? I have put a cam in with out replacing the bearings, but I was selling the car and was trying to cut costs, my bad. It's your decision.

A. Its on the front of the left cylinder head in plain sight. You don't have to remove anything to get to it. It's held in by a 10mm head bolt and has a black 3 wire connector. The wire colors are orange, black/light blue, and tan/yellow. Hope this helps. P.S. The 2.7L was never equipped with a distributor.
